2015 Oregon Legislative Session has started

Postby Rx2Ride » Fri Jan 30, 2015 6:28 am

The 2015 Oregon Legislative Session has officially started and it's going to be an "interesting" year. There is a "supermajority" of democrats this year (the house, senate, and governor's office). It's going to be VERY important that we all participate in our right to voice our opinion to OUR representatives.
Here is a quick brief on what's happening so far:

LC 3109- (not assigned a bill number yet) Gets rid of the law banning standing up on a motorcycle.
SB 420 and SB 172 Allows lane splitting by motorcycles during areas of congestion.
SB 424 Allow non-ethanol fuel for motorcycles.

Stay tuned for more info...

SB 424 has a hearing on March 2 with the Senate Business and Transportation committee. We will have a new mandate passed into law emphasizing biofuels. Current law already mandated biofuels. If you want to be able to use non-ethanol fuel in your motorcycle, call or email the committee in the next few days asking them to support SB424. Contact information can be found here….

How does this change things though? We can buy non-ethanol fuel now, right?

I know that in Eugene, you can still buy non-ethanol gasoline. (I don't know where to get non-ethanol diesel.) I don't know if non-ethanol gas is available in Portland. The American Motorcyclist Association is against E15. Moving forward, I think there will be a growing emphasis on biofuels in US and Oregon. Making a statement that I am a motorcyclist and I would like to be able to buy non-ethanol fuel, is important to me so I don't have to clean the carbs and FI every spring.

You don't stop riding because you grow old, you grow old because you stop riding.

I'm aware of the downsides of ethanol fuel. I've had lengthy conversations with small engine repair shops related to it while I fought issues with my lawnmower. Ended up not just needing carb rebuild parts, but a new carb and finally the engine just plain gave up. The owners of shops had significant sales/service increases due to ethanol, or so they explained it that way. No question it's bad for our bikes. My owners manual in fact states not to use more than 10% ethanol fuel.

I guess I didn't realize non-ethanol was difficult to get in other parts of the state. I just figured it was a capitalist dilemma and that station owners weren't finding the customer base to support selling non-ethanol at more of their stations. They don't have non-ethanol gas where I live, but it's only a few miles away, and anyone can pull up to the pump. I realize now that not everyone in Oregon is in the same position. Also, amending the language to exempt motorcycles is probably a good statement to make/send regardless of how it will actually impact the sale of non-ethanol fuel in Oregon. I wish though they would change the octane rating language too though. I think that's what turns some buyers off, the requirement that it be offered as premium if not for the other exceptions/exempt vehicles.
