Trail repair work party, Hood River, Saturday 4/4/15

Postby cjstiff » Sat Mar 28, 2015 9:27 pm

Planning a work party to repair a winter damaged section of trail 140. If we can get some support should be a morning project with riding in the afternoon.
Meeting at the intersection of Riordan Hill road and Post Canyon road (about a mile in from the first kiosk/ staging area on Riordan Hill.
Plan on starting at 9:00
Let me know if you can make it so I can get enough tools.

Thanks for setting this up Craig, and I hope we get MANY more dirtbikers than mountain bikers to work on this legacy trail!

Volunteers:
Hood River County will be holding a trail work party to reroute the popular section of Trail 140 that is below and to the north of FMX. This trail is primarily designed for motorcycles but is multi-use; also used by bicycles, equestrians, and hikers. The section was originally built by volunteers about 6-7 years ago. Unfortunately it was constructed in a wet area and has been unsustainable. The work party will remove brush and debris along the flagged trail corridor and cut-in some of the tread. The section of 140 on the south end in the timber will be partially rerouted so that it will better separate motorized traffic from FMX traffic.

Date:
Saturday April 4th, 2015.

Time:
Start time is 9:00am. Work party will end at approximately 1:00pm. Plenty of time to ride, run, or hike afterwards!

Place to Meet:
Meet along Riordan Hill Road (Forest Road 1000) where Trail 140 crosses the road. It is just prior to where Post Canyon Road (Forest Road 1400) junctions into Riordan Hill Road. There is some room for parking along the road near where the trail crosses and farther uphill where the roads junction.

Map:
Use the current Northwest Area Off-Highway Vehicle Map Guide. The junction of Riordan Hill and Post Canyon Roads can be clearly seen.

Work Party Leader:
Jason Wells will lead the work party. He can be contacted at (541)490-7333. Craig Stiff (140 adopter) will attend and be working with Jason.

Tools:
Hand tools will be provided but it will help if you can bring tools of your own (Loppers, Mcleods, Pulaskis, rakes, hoes, etc.).

Bring:
Coffee J, work clothes, rain gear (just in case), work gloves, sturdy boots, safety glasses, hat, water, lunch/snacks, sunscreen, etc.! Be prepared for some hard work, some easy work, and lots of fun! Also bring your motorcycle, ATV (to ride on other routes), bicycle, horse, or running shoes for a ride (or run) after the work party is over!

Volunteer Hours:
Your volunteer hours will be documented to help satisfy requirements for the County’s current Oregon Parks and Recreation Department ATV Operations and Maintenance grant. As always, this will be a big help for Hood River County and make our trail system much better for all users.

Directions to the Trail Work Party Area:
1) From I-84 eastbound take Exit 62. Turn right onto Cascade Avenue. Travel approximately 300 feet and make a right turn onto Mt. Adams Avenue. Mt. Adams Avenue turns into Wine Country Avenue which turns into Country Club Road. Drive for ~2.3 miles and turn right onto Riordan Hill Road. At ~3.5-4.0 miles (give or take a few tenths) you come to where Trail 140 crosses Riordan Hill Road. The last couple of miles of Riordan Hill Road is gravel. It is rough and has some pot holes so drive slowly.

2) From I-84 westbound take Exit 62 and turn left onto Cascade Avenue. Follow the remainder of the directions above.

Thanks and have fun! J
