Volunteers needed 8/25/13 for Trask MC trail finish work

Postby Tawmass » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:19 am

Your assistance is needed to retain a very nice dirt bike trail in the Trask. Please RSVP back to me via email ASAP as we cannot do this unless we get enough volunteers to confirm they will be there.

We will be meeting at the Trask County Park (MP 12 on the Trask River Rd) at 0900 on Sunday, 8/25/2013 and lead people in the Toll Rd to Pothole Sale Area 4 motorcycle trail where we need to complete tread work to prevent stream siltation. This trail crosses Pothole Creek on rock but we must finish the hardening of the east approach and finish the turn construction on the west side prior to the end of our in stream work period this summer.

Pothole Creek is one of the primary creeks in the watershed study area at this time and there is a sedimentation monitoring station just below where the trail crosses the creek. It is imperative that we complete the trail work in a manner that will completely eliminate the trail as a potential sedimentation source. Failure to prevent sedimentation from the trail could cause the loss of this nice dirt bike trail that bypasses a lot of road.

The OMRA will be bringing two Rokons with special trailers that can transport Turfstone down the single track trail to the east side of the creek. We need to place the Turfstone there to create a two blocks wide hardened trail surface where there is currently only a single row. This will help prevent bikes from running off the blocks into the dirt.

On the west side we will be using the ST240 machine to finish the lower trail work that could not be finished last fall as the ground became too muddy. A couple of authorized volunteer ST240 operators are needed to do that work.

ODF will supply dirt work hand tools for Turfstone installation. Volunteers should bring work gloves and dirt bikes to ride in to and out from the work site.

Thanks,

I'll be there, and I believe there will be about 8 Lobos present.

Wow, what a great day and a great group of people to fix trails with! There was a large contingent of Lobos Club members, plus others. Many hands made small work! We started to fix the Pothole Trail earlier in the year:

And we finished things up on this day at the direction of ODF's Dave Hiatt. The weather was perfect, although it started to sprinkle a bit, but then passed by. So much easier than the muck we worked in earlier in the year! After all the brickwork and chevrons were hauled down and planted, everyone was pleased with the result and it should last indefinitely for future users, plus keep the sedimentation out of the creek. Thanks again to all the great people that showed up and see you on the next trail party!

10/8/14 Trail Rework From User Damage

Postby Tawmass » Thu Oct 09, 2014 8:22 am

Yesterday on 10/8/14, Lyon Payne and I met Dave Hiatt on the Pothole Trail to redo our hard work from a year prior (see above). Evidently some riders don't seem to have enough skills to get up the brick work we so diligently laid down, plus they tore out our log chevron barriers on the sides. So we went back in and installed more robust methods of keeping the chevrons in place and forcing riders to use only the brick to get up out of the creek.

And for those that went to all the effort of destroying and removing the existing chevron barriers, therefore chewing up the dirt climb off to the side of the bricks - get a clue. Down stream is a water-quality check installed by a government agency. If they decide there is too much sedimentation in the stream from motorbikes, THEY WILL CLOSE THE TRAIL! Learn how to use your clutch properly and it's easy to climb up out of there on the brick work! Thanks to fruitless efforts like yours, this is how our trails get closed, so think twice or ride easier trails somewhere else.
