What GPS to buy?

Postby DNFDave » Sat Nov 17, 2012 9:25 am

I'm making my Christmas list and I need to know what is the best unit to buy. I got one for Christmas about five years ago and it was a piece of garbage.

Dave,
Follow this thread with Kevin:
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=9366

With that, I suggest getting at a minimum the Garmin 60CX or 60CSX units. If you're rolling in bank, get the newest equivalent, which is the Garmin 62S, as it has some great new features. Don't even look at anything else.

Nope. It's just a cool picture I found. Couple more bet's and I should be able to get a top of the line GPS. Is your picture really the tool your Dad used to perform your circumcision.

I have a Magellan Triton that has served me well and has National Geographic Topo maps with all national forest boundry's and roads. I'm not sure if they make them anymore but the only reason I mention it is because it uses battery's instead of rechargeable. I use mine mainly for hunting and it's easy to carry extra battery's, there would be nothing worse than having your battery go out miles into unknown territory.

I suggest going for one that uses Battery's.

Here's something outside the box...we use Garmin Rino's. You can track the other people in your group that also have Rino's and they also have 2-way radios. Great for when the last person way back breaks down
They're great for hunting, too.

I have no need for a GPS.
4-Gallon tank, and memory.
Works for me.

Dave... I've been running the Garmin Montana 650 with good results.
The screen is large enough to navigate while rolling and the touch screen works well with gloves.
You can use the lithium rechargeable battery or 3 AA batteries. It also comes with a kit to hard wire it to your bike.
You should be able to find one for less than $400.

Don't know what type of phone you're using Dave but there's a couple of solid apps that do a lot of these days & they are affordable. I use them for backpacking and most run in airplane mode (so you aren't hogging battery life). You might check out the apple store or the droid version of that.
