GROUPS URGE ATV LIMITS ON NATIONAL FORESTS

The U.S. Forest Service is moving to tighten where ATVs can ride on national forests and grasslands

   Nearly 300 conservation, recreation, religious and other groups from 39 states wrote to U.S. Forest Service Chief Dale Bosworth this month pressing the agency for strong new rules limiting ATVs in national forests. Triva Question

Anyone who has ever been dirt biking in rocky terrain knows that flat tires are still a fact of life. You would think that with all the technical innovations in the motorcycle world, someone would have thought of a solution to this age-old problem. Well, there is something new in flat-proof technology for dirt bikes. What is it?

The original Adventure Trail will be making one of its last appearances during the Rites of Spring in Michigan on April 30-May 2. NOHVCC Project Coordinator Dana Bell reports that we have some awesome new artwork in the new version with revised text developed by the NOHVCC  Youth and Education Teams.  The new panels will be easy to reproduce, thereby giving us the opportunity to spread the messages at many more venues in the coming years.

Triva Answer

They're simply called Tire Balls and they consist of 32-50 rubber balls installed inside each tire instead of an inner tube (the balls themselves can be tuned with different air pressures). If a nail goes through the tire or a rock edge gets smacked, an individual ball or two may deflate, but then the others move in to take their place. A Tire Ball setup is expensive ($260 per wheel), and as of now most of the customers are serious racers who can't afford to have a flat.
