Triva Question

Supermoto, the newest form of motorcycle competition, grabbed a lot of attention last year. Utilizing dirt bikes with grooved road racing slicks, the events take place on tracks that are a combination of dirt and pavement with several jumps. Where and when did the idea behind Supermoto first come about?

(see answer below)

The jury is still out whether Supermoto racing will be able to sustain itself at the top levels over the next couple of seasons or whether it's just a passing fad in the world of motorsports.

Triva Answer

You might think Europe, since the sport has been very popular there for quite a few years, but the first folks to incorporate a Supermoto-type format was ABC Sports back in the late '70s with their made-for-TV specials pitting Pro road racers against Pro motocrossers on a track they designed at Carlsbad, CA. They called it Superbikers and it lasted until 1986, seeing the likes of King Kenny Roberts, Rick Johnson, Jeff Ward, Kent Howerton, and the ever popular Danny "Magoo" Chandler compete.
