Triva Question

Which one of the following incidents started the famous Hatfield/McCoy feud that raged for several decades along the West Virginia and Kentucky border?

A) A stolen hog that resulted in a trial.

B) A murder at an Election Day picnic.

C) The ill-fated romance between Roseanna McCoy and Johnse Hatfield.

D) None of the above.

(see answer below)

A couple of quads head down one of the many scenic trails along the Hatfield/McCoy trail system in southern West Virginia. The ride area was in the works for almost a decade, but has now become a shining example of how a large-scale trail system can benefit everyone involved, including the surrounding communities where OHV dollars are spent every year.

Triva Answer
D) None of the above.

Although all three of the incidents listed above did actually occur (the stolen pig in 1878, the murder in 1882 and the romance in 1880), the hostilities between the two families really began when West Virginia was admitted to the Union back in 1863. The Hatfields were southern sympathizers while the McCoys were Union and the two clans began a series of raids and robberies against each other across the Tug River. History records Harmon McCoy as the first victim of the feud when he was shot soon after coming home from the Civil War in 1865. No one was ever brought to trial for his murder, but but by all accounts one of the Hatfields was responsible. When the feud ended in 1891, 13 lives had been claimed.
